A Vision of Health and an Approach to Healing

Over the years of working with patients, I have developed several guiding principles of health and healing. I apply them in my own life and they form the foundation of my healing practice. These principles are hope, responsibility, intuition, and wholeness.

I truly believe that each of us has the potential to live a life that is vital, healthy, meaningful, and fulfilling beyond what we ever would have dreamed was possible. I have seen my patients apply these principles and transform their own lives. In this personal statement, I will briefly discuss each of these principles; explain their significance in my life, and how I use them in my work.

Hope

Let me start by saying that I feel blessed because I deeply love what I do. I love both my work and my life. However, it wasn’t always the case. Like many others in my profession, I was inspired to become a healer not just by my desire to be of service; but also by a need to heal myself. I knew that I could not take my patients to a place of health that I had not already personally realized.

One of the great gifts of my life has been that, even during the most difficult periods, hope never left me. It springs from a deep knowledge that each person already possesses the basic resources that they need to bring about a life of happiness. Hope is a reflection of our innermost health; the vision of this potential calls and inspires us forth no matter how trying our condition.

After weathering many struggles in my own life, I have arrived at a place where my experience of life is joyful. There are continual refinements to make, challenges to overcome and lessons to learn, but the process is no longer a burden. I see now that hope is the wisdom that always knew this was possible. In my practice, I offer hope to my patients and trust that, not only is healing possible; it is our divine birthright.

Intuition

We all have the ability to heal and to be happy, and it is our intuition that tells us exactly what we need in order to achieve this. As I look back, I see that intuition has been my constant companion, guiding me in life and to my destined profession. Since I was a child, I have longed to be an educator. I knew that I was put here to serve, and I felt an insatiable desire to comprehend the subtler, more spiritual aspects of life. I did not know how those interests might express themselves in a career, but when I was 22, I felt an overwhelming pull to visit India. Somehow, I knew the answer would find me there.

Indeed, while traveling through India and Nepal, a nearly impossible series of coincidences led me to a remarkable woman, an acupuncturist. Literally within seconds of meeting her, I knew that I had found my calling. It was as if a mysterious Fed-Ex package had arrived saying, “This is your destiny.”

Since that revelation, my education, training and practice as an acupuncturist have unfolded with a grace that I could not have orchestrated on my own. Trusting my intuition has led me forward, to a state of ever-greater clarity. Time and again, doors have opened and I have heeded the call.

Today, a critical part of my practice is helping patients trust their intuition. As a practitioner, I offer advice, feedback and suggestions, however if these ideas do not resonate with a patient, quite simply, the treatment will not work for them. I may have the expertise but ultimately, my patients are their own best health experts. Our bodies know what they need and how to intuitively ask for it. I just teach my patients how to listen.

Responsibility

Going to India and finding my calling; it sounds somewhat clichéd. Many people have gone there in search of themselves and come back empty handed. Why did it work for me? Because, from the outset, my intention and purpose were clear. I was going to find answers. I have no doubt that the clarity of my intention ultimately drew those answers to me.

This kind of clarity of intention and purpose comes only when we take responsibility for ourselves. All of us are blessed with an inherent drive that impels us toward wellness. However, we may discover some habits and tendencies keep us from achieving that state. But when we become clear about what matters most, the struggle tends to resolve on its own; the obstacles to greater health gradually fall away.

Part of my work is to help patients embrace responsibility and realize they already hold the key to their own healing. When they become active participants in their healing process, not only do their bodies heal, they develop a sense of health, wholeness and authenticity that they have never experienced before.

 Wholeness

My life’s journey has led me to an ever-deepening recognition of my wholeness. I realize that, while a state of health is something we attain, wholeness is something we have never been without.

Regardless of their condition, I never see patients as broken. Instead, I see them as whole, with their own intrinsic beauty. I believe that, on some level, patients come to see me so that I can reflect their wholeness back to them; by doing so they discover it for themselves.

Ultimately, however, it is discovering our own potential for health and happiness that brings us full circle. Finding our own inner resources brings us hope. We open up to our intuition, realize its wisdom, and begin to trust. We take responsibility for our own lives and begin to recognize our innate wholeness. As we begin to live these principles, the world responds in-kind
